Geology of Antarctica
Nearly all the continent is covered by a thick layer of ice, so this has made it difficult for scientists to study the geology. However through techniques such as remote sensing we now know that geologically West Antarctica is similar to the Andes of South America. East Antarctica is very old geologically, with rocks that have formed more than 3 billion years ago.
The main mineral resource is coal.
